SONGWRITING

Songwriting

I can hear the questions in your head.

  • How do I begin to write a song?

  • Which chords shall I use?

  • I can’t think of anything to write about.

  • What lyrics shall I begin with?

  • How do I write a melody? Etc….and the list goes on !

STOP !!!

You’re already overthinking and boxing yourself into a corner, before you even begin.

RELAX and take a breath !

Songwriting is a form of expression that can stimulate our senses in so many ways.

Here are just a few basic tips, ideas and approaches to writing songs.

  • WRITE SOMETHING EVERY DAY

It’s all about opening up the flood gates for ideas to flow.

Sit down everyday with pen and paper for 15 min and just write Words / Phrases / Sentences / Thoughts.

Be random, no need to follow a particular storyline (that will come later).

Keep all of your work so you can look back at what you’ve written at a later time – You may just be SURPRISED !

  • CHORDS

Play around with different chord combinations and rhythms.

See what resonates with you.

This may change from day to day….and that’s ok.

Be free-thinking and don’t box yourself in.

USE TRIGGERS

If you like the sound of a chord progression or how a random Word / Phrase feels and sounds, use these to trigger more ideas.

Maybe even start to humm along with the chord progression and play around with melody ideas.

Remember to always use your senses and try visualizing your ideas.

In conclusion.

Listen to lots of different styles and genres of music, expand your musical vocabulary for inspiration.

Experimentation and discovery is the key – the ideas will soon follow as will full songs.

Most of all, have fun and enjoy the journey !
